MACE Performance Media Blasting

Media Blasting

Almost all restoration projects start with a large object that was painted some time in its past. Regardless of how it once looked, the old paint really needs to be prepared so that new paint can be applied. For some projects, a thorough rough sanding is all that is needed but, for many projects, all the paint needs to be removed. Smaller parts can be done by hand or dipped in solvents to remove the coating. Older parts may have areas effected by rust or have earlier repairs with body fillers. Solvents do poorly with these applications. Large parts, like bodies and frames, respond very well to media blasting.

Media blasting is a follow on and an improvement to sand blasting. The principle is the same; an abrasive agent is accelerated to high speed in a pressurized air stream. This action removes the paint while leaving the harder substrate intact. The problem with sand blasting is that the friction generated by the impact significantly heats the material and may cause damage due to warping. Modern media agents have been developed to be used at a lower pressure and cut rather than shatter the paint. The result is less damage to the underlying substrate.

Here at MACE Performance we only use high quality medias (plastic, soda, glass bead, garnet, as well as many others) that allow for safe low pressure, low heat, paint and rust removal. We can blast anything from a one-of-a-kind vehicle to farm implements. If it fits in our 14'W x 28'L x 8'H booth we will blast it!
